What I use.

I use Linux, work with AI, and run a fair bit of my own software. Here’s the setup, grouped by what I use it for.

Using AI

Coding agents, desktop apps and local models. The labels show where I use each one.

  • IDE
    Antigravity

An AI coding environment in my setup.

  • Terminal
    Codex

A coding agent I use from the terminal.

  • Terminal
    Claude Code

Another part of my coding workflow, alongside Codex.

  • Desktop app
    ChatGPT

I use the desktop app as well as the coding tools.

  • Desktop app
    Claude Desktop

The desktop app, separate from Claude Code in the terminal.

    NotebookLM

    For working through source material.

  • Local runtime
    Ollama

Runs models locally on the desktop.

    Superpowers

For the implementation process: planning, tests, code review, and finishing a change.

  • Workflow
    GSD

For larger projects where the plan and context need to survive more than one session.

02

At my desk

The computer, camera and audio kit I work with.

03

Everyday kit

The kit that comes with me.

04

Building & writing

Editors, notes and the small tools that keep work moving between machines.

  • IDE
    VS Code

One of my development editors, including on the Asahi MacBook.

  • Terminal
    Ghostty

My terminal, with JetBrains Mono and a Gruvbox theme.

  • Terminal
    Oh My Zsh

Manages my Zsh plugins. The desktop setup uses Powerlevel10k, fuzzy completion, history suggestions, and syntax highlighting.

  • Local runtime
    Podman

Runs local containers. I use Podman Desktop when I need a graphical view of them.

  • Local runtime
    Distrobox

Keeps a Fedora development environment alongside the desktop system.

  • Desktop app
    Obsidian

My notes and runbooks live here, including the records I used to put this page together.

  • Self-hosted
    Penpot

    Self-hosted design and prototyping.

  • Desktop app
    CopyQ

Replaced Klipper for clipboard history and pinned snippets. A shortcut sends useful text straight to my Obsidian inbox.

  • Desktop app
    Vicinae

The launcher I use for apps and small commands, including opening the vault.

  • Desktop app
    Floorp

My main browser on the Asahi MacBook, and also installed on the Steam Deck.

  • Desktop app
    KDE Connect

Shares files, clipboard content, and notifications between the phone and desktop.

  • Local runtime
    Syncthing

Moves my vault between machines, with Home Assistant Green as the always-on hub.

05

Running the house

Home automation, networking and the services I host myself.

  • Home Assistant Green

Runs the smart-home hub and my dashboards on its own box, separate from the desktop.

  • MikroTik RB5009

My router. It now also runs the primary DNS service and a Caddy container.

  • UniFi U7 Pro

Provides the Wi-Fi, with its controller on Home Assistant Green.

  • Self-hosted
    Technitium DNS Server

Replaced AdGuard Home for DNS and filtering. The primary runs on the router, with a second instance on Home Assistant Green.

  • Self-hosted
    Caddy

Handles reverse proxies. Routes for the migrated home services run on the router; desktop-hosted services still use the desktop.

  • Service
    Tailscale

For reaching my own services when I am away from home.

  • Self-hosted
    n8n

For workflow automation between tools and services.

06

Off the clock

Games, music and something to watch.

  • Steam Deck

For games, with SteamOS and a KDE desktop underneath. I also have Nuvio, Floorp, and Ghostty on it.

  • Desktop app
    Nuvio

Part of my media setup on the MacBook and Steam Deck.

  • Self-hosted
    Audiobookshelf

My self-hosted audiobook library, running on Home Assistant Green.

  • Self-hosted
    Music Assistant

Runs alongside Home Assistant for music across the house.

  • NVIDIA Shield Pro

The media box in the living room.
